Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty with the "SKy" intravertebral bone expander system
Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty operation description
The "SKy" intravertebral bone expander system is designed to treat compression fractures of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae from Th5 to L5 level and allows to restore the height of the fractured vertebral body and form cavities in the spongy bone tissue by inserting of special device (kyphoplasty method). Vertebroplasty is just a bone cement or polymer filler intravertebral injection.
Kyphoplasty operation with the "SKy" intravertebral bone expander system.
Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty operation technique
Expanding tube is supplied in a non-expanded form and mounted in the supply system. It is inserted into the fractured vertebra, and after installation in the desired position, a controlled expansion is performed to achieve the final extended state. When the extension of the tube is completed, it is returned to its original state and removed from the bone.
Expansion of the tube is carried out by turning the handle of the supply system clockwise, while the scale on the casing shows the degree of expansion and the end of expansion.
Compression of the tube (before its removal) is carried out by turning the handle of the supply system counterclockwise until the indicator on the scale reaches the level of the minimum diameter of the expanding section.
Compression fracture cases, when indicated vertebral height restoration, distraction and fixation to improve functioning and mobility, or treatment of spinal deformities to restore the vertebral form in the following conditions:
- patient is over 18 years old and has a mature skeleton
- examination data coincide with the x-ray data on the level of lesion
- back pain due to compression fracture of the vertebrae requires relief (as the pain significantly reduces the degree of activity of the patient and worsens his household adaptation)
In this intervention (kyphoplasty) the duration of hospital stay limited to a few hours. Vertebroplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis.
Сontraindications for vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty
- Diseases and pathological conditions of a general nature, in which operative treatment or surgery with this device may be contraindicated
- Previously performed vertebroplasty at affected levels
- Tuberculosis in history
- Pregnancy
- Infection localized at the site of operation, osteomyelitis, fever and / or leukocytosis (according to the complete clinical blood count and the determination of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR))
- Morbid obesity
- Scoliosis with an angle of more than 40°
- Allergic reactions to bone cement or bone filling materials
