What Is Migergot?
Migergot (ergotamine tartrate and caffeine suppositories) is a combination of an alpha-blocker and a stimulant and vasoconstrictor indicated as therapy to abort or prevent vascular headache, e.g., migraine, migraine variants or so-called "histaminic cephalalgia."
What Are Side Effects of Migergot?
Common side effects of Migergot include:
- low blood supply and oxygen (ischemia),
- bluish skin color,
- cold extremities,
- chest pain,
- EKG changes, muscle pains,
- temporary fast or slow heart rate,
- high blood pressure (hypertension),
- nausea,
- vomiting,
- rectal or anal ulcer (from overuse of suppositories),
- numbness and tingling,
- weakness,
- spinning sensation (vertigo), and
- localized swelling and
- itching
Dosage for Migergot
The dose of Migergot is one suppository at the start of the attack, and a second suppository after one hour, if needed, for full effect.
What Drugs, Substances, or Supplements Interact with Migergot?
Migergot may interact with other vasoconstrictors, sympathomimetics, beta-blockers, nicotine, and macrolide antibiotics. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.
Migergot During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before using Migergot; it may harm a fetus. Because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, breastfeeding is not recommended while using Migergot. Withdrawal symptoms such as rebound headche may occur if you suddenly stop taking Migergot.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Stop using caffeine and ergotamine and call your doctor at once if you have:
- severe pain in your stomach or back;
- bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds;
- cramps in your hips or legs, leg pain or swelling;
- weak pulses in your arms and legs, numbness and tingling or pain in your hands or feet, blue-colored fingers or toes;
- muscle pain or weakness in your arms or legs;
- fast or slow heart rate;
- severe headache, blurred vision, pounding in your neck or ears;
- sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of the body), sudden severe headache, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance; or
- painful sores on your rectum after using the rectal suppositories.
Serious side effects are more likely with overuse of caffeine and ergotamine. This medicine is not for daily use.
Common side effects may include:
- numbness, tingling, burning pain;
- dizziness, spinning sensation;
- weakness;
- itching or swelling;
- nausea, vomiting; or
- (with suppository use) a rectal sore or ulcer.

SIDE EFFECTS
Cardiovascular
Vasoconstrictive complications of a serious nature may occur at times. These include ischemia, cyanosis, absence of pulse, cold extremities, gangrene, precordial distress and pain, EKG changes and muscle pains. Although these effects occur most commonly with long-term therapy at relatively high doses, they have also been reported with short-term or normal doses. Other cardiovascular adverse effects include transient tachycardia or bradycardia and hypertension.
Gastrointestinal
Nausea and vomiting; rectal or anal ulcer (from overuse of suppositories).
Neurological
Paresthesias, numbness, weakness, and vertigo.
Allergic
Localized edema and itching.
