Zomig (zolmitriptan) Nasal Spray and Imitrex (sumatriptan) are headache medicines called selective serotonin receptor agonists used to treat migraine headaches.

Side effects of Zomig Nasal Spray and Imitrex that are similar include unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth, discomfort/burning/numbness/pain/irritation in the nose or throat after using the nasal spray, flushing (warmth, redness, or tingling under the skin), nausea, weakness, drowsiness, dizziness, or pressure or heavy feeling in any part of your body.

Common side effects of Zomig include:

• unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth,
• discomfort in the nose or throat after using the nasal spray,
• warmth/redness/tingling/numbness under the skin,
• nausea,
• dry mouth,
• weakness,
• drowsiness,
• dizziness, or
• pressure or heavy feeling in any part of your body

Common side effects of Imitrex include:

• mild headache (not a migraine),
• pain or chest tightness,
• pressure or heavy feeling in any part of your body,
• weakness,
• feeling hot or cold,
• dizziness,
• spinning sensation,
• drowsiness,
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• drooling,
• unusual taste in your mouth after using nasal spray,
• burning/numbness/pain/irritation in your nose or throat after using nasal spray, or
• flushing (warmth, redness, or tingling under the skin).

Zomig (zolmitriptan) Nasal Spray is a headache medicine that narrows blood vessels around the brain used to treat migraine headaches. Zomig Nasal Spray will only treat a headache that has already begun. Zomig Nasal Spray will not prevent headaches or reduce the number of attacks.

Imitrex (sumatriptan) is a selective serotonin receptor agonist used in oral, intranasal or injectable dosage form to treat migraine headaches. Imitrex is available as a generic drug.

Zomig may interact with other migraine headache medicines, cimetidine, or antidepressants. Tell your doctor all medications you are taking. During pregnancy, Zomig should be used only when prescribed. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Imitrex may interact with sibutramine (Meridia); monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) isocarboxazid (Marplan); selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft), serotonin; norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, venlafaxine (Effexor)) and duloxetine (Cymbalta); and ergot-containing medications, dihydroergotamine (Migranal) and ergotamine (Methergine).

The initial dose of Zomig is 2.5 mg or less. The dose can be repeated after 2 hours if symptoms persist. The maximum dose is 10 mg per day.

The maximum single recommended adult dose of Imitrex Injection for the acute treatment of migraine or cluster headache is 6 mg injected subcutaneously. For the treatment of migraine, if side effects are dose limiting, lower doses (1 mg to 5 mg) of Imitrex may be used.
