What Is Feldene?

Feldene (piroxicam) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) indicated for the relief of the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

What Are Side Effects of Feldene?

Side effects of Feldene are:

  • swelling,
  • anorexia,
  • abdominal pain,
  • constipation,
  • diarrhea,
  • indigestion,
  • heartburn,
  • upset stomach,
  • stomach pain,
  • elevated liver enzymes,
  • bloating,
  • gas,
  • gross bleeding/perforation,
  • heartburn,
  • nausea,
  • ulcers (gastric/duodenal),
  • dizziness,
  • headache,
  • nervousness,
  • skin itching or rash,
  • blurred vision,
  • ringing in your ears, and
  • vomiting.

Dosage for Feldene

For the relief of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, the recommended dose of Feldene is 20 mg given orally once per day. If desired, the daily dose may be divided.

What Drugs, Substances, or Supplements Interact with Feldene?

Feldene may interact with alcohol, antidepressants, blood thinners, lithium, methotrexate, diuretics (water pills), steroids, aspirin or other NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), or ACE inhibitors. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

Feldene During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment with Feldene; it may harm a fetus. Taking Feldene during the last 3 months of pregnancy may harm the fetus. Do not take Feldene during pregnancy unless your doctor has told you to. Feldene can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Feldene Consumer Information

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficult breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling).

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of a heart attack or stroke: chest pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder, sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, leg swelling, feeling short of breath.

Stop using piroxicam and call your doctor at once if you have:

  • severe headache, blurred vision, pounding in your neck or ears;
  • heart problems--swelling, rapid weight gain, feeling short of breath;
  • liver problems--loss of appetite, stomach pain (upper right side), tiredness, itching, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
  • signs of stomach bleeding--bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds;
  • kidney problems--little or no urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath; or
  • low red blood cells (anemia)--pale skin, unusual tiredness, feeling light-headed or short of breath, cold hands and feet.

Common side effects may include:

  • abnormal liver function tests;
  • urination problems;
  • upset stomach, heartburn, loss of appetite, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting;
  • gas, diarrhea, constipation;
  • dizziness, headache;
  • itching, rash; or
  • ringing in your ears.

Clinical Trials Experience

Because clinical trials are conducted under widely varying conditions, adverse reaction rates observed in the clinical trials of a drug cannot be directly compared to rates in the clinical trials of another drug and may not reflect the rates observed in practice.

In patients taking FELDENE or other NSAIDs, the most frequently reported adverse experiences occurring in approximately 1–10% of patients are:

Cardiovascular System: Edema

Digestive System: Anorexia, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting

Nervous System: Dizziness, headache, vertigo

Skin and Appendages: Pruritus, rash

Special Senses: Tinnitus

Additional adverse experiences reported occasionally include:

Cardiovascular System: Palpitations

Digestive System: Stomatitis

Nervous System: Drowsiness

Special Senses: Blurred vision

Body As a Whole: Fever, infection, sepsis, anaphylactic reactions, appetite changes, death, flu-like syndrome, pain (colic), serum sickness

Cardiovascular System: Congestive heart failure, hypertension, tachycardia, syncope, arrhythmia, exacerbation of angina, hypotension, myocardial infarction, vasculitis

Digestive System: Dyspepsia, elevated liver enzymes, gross bleeding/perforation, heartburn, ulcers (gastric/duodenal), dry mouth, esophagitis, gastritis, glossitis, hematemesis, hepatitis, jaundice, melena, rectal bleeding, eructation, liver failure, pancreatitis

Hemic and Lymphatic System: Anemia, increased bleeding time, ecchymosis, eosinophilia, epistaxis, leukopenia, purpura, petechial rash, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, hemolytic anemia, aplastic anemia, lymphadenopathy, pancytopenia

Hypersensitivity: Positive ANA

Metabolic and Nutritional: Weight changes, Fluid retention, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia

Nervous System: Anxiety, asthenia, confusion, depression, dream abnormalities, insomnia, malaise, nervousness, paresthesia, somnolence, tremors, akathisia, convulsions, coma, hallucinations, meningitis, mood alterations

Respiratory System: Asthma, dyspnea, respiratory depression, pneumonia

Skin and Appendages: Alopecia, bruising, desquamation, erythema, photosensitivity, sweat, angioedema, toxic epidermal necrosis, erythema multiforme, exfoliative dermatitis, onycholysis, Stevens Johnson Syndrome, urticaria, vesiculobullous reaction

Special Senses: Conjunctivitis, hearing impairment, swollen eyes

Urogenital System: Abnormal renal function, cystitis, dysuria, hematuria, hyperkalemia, interstitial nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, oliguria/polyuria, proteinuria, renal failure, glomerulonephritis

Reproductive system and breast disorders: Female fertility decreased
