What Is Elestat?

Elestat (epinastine HCl ophthalmic solution) is an antihistamine used to prevent itching of the eyes associated with allergies. Elestat is available in generic form.

What Are Side Effects of Elestat?

Common side effects of Elestat include:

• eye irritation (burning, redness),
• watery eyes,
• headache, or
• cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat.

Tell your doctor if you have serious side effects of Elestat including:

• swelling, redness, severe discomfort, crusting or drainage (around your eyelids); or
• severe burning, stinging, or other irritation after using the eye drops.

Dosage for Elestat

The recommended dosage of Elestat ophthalmic is one drop in each eye twice a day.

What Drugs, Substances, or Supplements Interact with Elestat?

Other drugs may interact with Elestat. Do not use other eye medications during treatment with Elestat without first talking to your doctor. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

Elestat During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding

Elestat should be used only when prescribed during pregnancy. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using epinastine ophthalmic and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

• swelling, redness, severe discomfort, crusting or drainage (around your eyelids); or
• severe burning, stinging, or other irritation after using the eye drops.

Less serious side effects may include:

• mild burning, itching, or eye irritation;
• watery eyes;
• headache; or
• cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat.

Clinical Studies Experience

Because clinical studies are conducted under widely varying conditions, adverse reaction rates observed in the clinical studies of a drug cannot be directly compared to rates in the clinical studies of another drug and may not reflect the rates observed in practice.

The most frequently reported ocular adverse reactions occurring in approximately 1-10% of patients were burning sensation in the eye, folliculosis, hyperemia, and pruritus.

The most frequently reported non-ocular adverse reactions were infection (cold symptoms and upper respiratory infections), seen in approximately 10% of patients, and headache, rhinitis, sinusitis, increased cough, and pharyngitis, seen in approximately 1 - 3% of patients.

Some of these reactions were similar to the underlying disease being studied.

Postmarketing Experience

The following reactions have been identified during postmarketing use of ELESTAT® in clinical practice. Because they are reported voluntarily from a population of unknown size, estimates of frequency cannot be made. The reactions, which have been chosen for inclusion due to either their seriousness, frequency of reporting, possible causal connection to ELESTAT®, or a combination of these factors, include: lacrimation increased.
