Xiidra (lifitegrast ophthalmic solution) and Lacrisert (hydroxypropyl cellulose ophthalmic insert) are used to treat dry eyes.

Lacrisert is usually used when an artificial tears solution is not successful. Lacrisert may also be used to treat certain other eye disorders (keratitis, decreased corneal sensitivity).

Xiidra and Lacrisert belong to different drug classes. Xiidra is a lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) antagonist and Lacrisert is an ophthalmic insert.

Side effects of Xiidra and Lacrisert that are similar include eye irritation or discomfort and blurred vision.

Side effects of Xiidra that are different from include changes in taste.

Side effects of Lacrisert that are different from Xiidra include eye redness, tearing, eye sensitivity to light, sticky eyelashes, and eyelid swelling.

Tell your doctor if you experience severe side effects of Lacrisert such as a serious allergic reaction, including rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.

Lacrisert (hydroxypropyl cellulose ophthalmic insert) is an ophthalmic insert used to treat dry eyes. Lacrisert is usually used when an artificial tears solution is not successful. Lacrisert may also be used to treat certain other eye disorders (keratitis, decreased corneal sensitivity).

Xiidra may interact with other drugs. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. During pregnancy, Xiidra should be used only if prescribed; it is unknown if it would affect a fetus. It is unknown if Xiidra passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

The dose of Xiidra is one drop twice daily in each eye (approximately 12 hours apart). Contact lenses should be removed prior to administration of Xiidra and can be reinserted 15 minutes after administration.

A dose of one Lacrisert ophthalmic insert in each eye once daily is usually sufficient to relieve the symptoms associated with moderate to severe dry eye syndromes.
