What Is Atropine Solution?
Atropine (atropine sulfate) Ophthalmic Solution is topical anticholinergicfor ophthalmic use indicated for cycloplegia, mydriasis, and penalization of the healthy eye in the treatment of amblyopia.
What Are Side Effects of Atropine Solution?
Common side effects of Atropine Ophthalmic Solution include
- eye sensitivity to light,
- increased blood pressure,
- eye pain and stinging upon instillation of drops,
- blurred vision,
- eye inflammation (superficial keratitis) and decreased tearing,
- conjunctivitis,
- contact dermatitis,
- eyelid swelling,
- skin dryness,
- dry mouth and throat,
- restlessness,
- irritability,
- delirium from stimulation of the central nervous system,
- fast heart rate, and
- flushed skin of the face and neck.
Dosage for Atropine Solution
In individuals from three (3) months of age or greater, the dose of Atropine Ophthalmic Solution is 1 drop applied topically to the cul-de-sac of the conjunctiva, forty minutes prior to the intended maximal dilation time. In individuals 3 years of age or greater, doses may be repeated up to twice daily as needed.
What Drugs, Substances, or Supplements Interact with Atropine Solution?
Atropine Ophthalmic Solution may interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.
Atropine Solution During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
During pregnancy Atropine Ophthalmic Solution should be used only if prescribed; it is unknown if it would affect a fetus. Traces of Atropine Ophthalmic Solution pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Atropine Solution Consumer Information
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Tell your caregivers right away if you have:
- a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
- pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest;
- nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, feeling full after eating a small amount;
- blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights;
- trouble swallowing;
- feeling restless or excited;
- tremors, problems with balance or muscle movement;
- increased thirst, hot and dry skin;
- tiredness; or
- a severe skin rash.
Common side effects may include:
- fast heartbeats, pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest;
- flushing (sudden warmth, redness, or tingly feeling);
- urinary problems;
- constipation, bloating, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting;
- loss of interest in sex, impotence;
- dry mouth;
- dry eyes, blurred vision, your eyes may be more sensitive to light;
- confusion, dizziness; or
- headache, drowsiness.

The following adverse reactions have been identified following use of atropine sulfate ophthalmic solution. Because these reactions are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequency or establish a causal relationship to drug exposure.
Ocular Adverse Reactions
Eye pain and stinging occurs upon instillation of atropine sulfate ophthalmic solution. Other commonly occurring adverse reactions include, blurred vision, photophobia, superficial keratitis and decreased lacrimation. Allergic reactions such as papillary conjunctivitis, contact dermatitis, and lid edema may also occur less commonly.
Systemic Adverse Reactions
Systemic effects of atropine are related to its anti-muscarinic activity. Systemic adverse events reported include dryness of skin, mouth, and throat from decreased secretions from mucus membranes; restlessness, irritability or delirium from stimulation of the central nervous system; tachycardia; flushed skin of the face and neck.
