Thyroid Nodule

A thyroid nodule is a lump or mass in the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland in front of the neck. A goiter is a term that describes an enlargement of the thyroid gland.

Signs and symptoms of thyroid nodules depend on their size and location. Symptoms and signs can include a hard or soft lump in the neck that can be solid or filled with fluid. Many of these nodules are painless and do not cause other symptoms. A large nodule can cause

• shortness of breath or
• difficulty swallowing.

Only a small percentage of thyroid nodules are cancerous.

Causes of thyroid nodules

Various conditions, including cysts, inflammation of the thyroid, and benign or malignant tumors cause thyroid nodules.
