Reye's Syndrome

Reye's syndrome is a rare but often severe illness that primarily occurs in children and adolescents.

The first signs and symptoms of Reye's syndrome are

• vomiting and
• mental status changes.

Other associated signs and symptoms can include

• irritable, aggressive, or irrational behavior,
• confusion,
• disorientation or hallucinations,
• weakness or paralysis in the arms and legs,
• seizures,
• excessive lethargy, or a
• decreased level of consciousness.

In some cases, the illness can lead to coma and death.

Cause of Reye's syndrome

Although the cause of Reye's syndrome is unclear, studies have identified that it appears to follow some viral infections and the use of aspirin medications in children and teens. Most children who develop the condition have a history of a recent viral infection, and in many cases, a caregiver gave the child aspirin as the treatment for the infection.
