Head and Neck Cancer Symptoms

Head and neck cancers are cancers that arise in the oral cavity, salivary glands, paranasal sinuses, and nasal passages, pharynx, or larynx (voice box).

Signs and symptoms of head and neck cancer depend on the exact location and extent of spread (stage) of the tumor but can include

  • enlarged lymph nodes in the neck,
  • hoarseness,
  • mouth ulcer,
  • ear pain,
  • trouble swallowing,
  • persistent sore throat, or
  • voice changes.

Causes of Head and Neck Cancers

Head and neck cancers are typically caused by tobacco use or alcohol use, although human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, radiation to the head and neck, and Epstein-Barr virus infection are also risk factors for developing head and neck cancers.
