Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the thyroid gland of the neck. Thyroid cancer is more common in women than in men.

The most common sign or symptom of thyroid cancer is a hard lump in the front of the neck, in the thyroid gland (thyroid nodule). Other associated signs and symptoms can occur, particularly if the lump is growing rapidly, and can include

• neck pain,
• enlarged lymph nodes,
• neck swelling,
• hoarseness,
• difficulty swallowing,
• difficulty breathing,
• throat pain, and
• persistent cough.

These symptoms and signs are not all specific to thyroid cancer and may result from other conditions, as well.

Cause of thyroid cancer

Doctors do not understand the exact cause of thyroid cancer, although certain factors, including radiation treatment to the neck, can increase the risk of getting thyroid cancer.
