Trichomoniasis Symptoms

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (sexually transmitted disease or STD). The infection can occur in both women and men, and it spreads by sexual contact. Trichomonas infection is more common in women than in men.

Many people may have trichomonas infection and not show any symptoms or signs. In others, the infection causes specific symptoms that can include

  • vaginal discharge,
  • vaginal inflammation,
  • urethral discharge in men,
  • vaginal or urethral burning, and
  • pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse or during urination.

Other associated symptoms can include

  • cervical inflammation,
  • vaginal irritation,
  • vaginal itching,
  • vaginal odor, and
  • vulvar inflammation and redness.

Symptoms and signs can appear for up to 28 days after exposure to the parasite.

Cause of trichomoniasis

Infection with the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis causes trichomoniasis.
