Are Xyzal and Allegra the Same Thing?

Xyzal (levocetirizine dihydrochloride) and Allegra (fexofenadine hydrochloride) are antihistamines used to treat allergic symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes), and hives.

Both Xyzal and Allegra are available over-the-counter (OTC).

  • dark-colored urine,
  • foul-smelling stools,

  • loss of appetite

Common side effects of Allegra include:

Contact your doctor if you have serious but less common side effects of Allegra including

  • allergic reactions,
  • fever,
  • chills,
  • body aches,
  • cough, or
  • other flu symptoms.

What Is Xyzal?

Xyzal (levocetirizine dihydrochloride) is an antihistamine indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults and children 2 years of age and older.

What is Allegra?

Allegra (fexofenadine hydrochloride) is an antihistamine used to treat allergic symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes), and urticaria (hives). Allegra is available as a generic drug.

 

What Drugs Interact With Xyzal?

Xyzal may interact with alcohol, other medicines that can make you drowsy (cold or allergy medicine, sedatives, narcotics, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, medicine for seizures, depression or anxiety). Xyzal may also interact with ritonavir or theophylline.

What Drugs Interact With Allegra?

Allergra may interact with alcohol, other medicines that can make you drowsy (cold or allergy medicine, sedatives, narcotics, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, medicine for seizures, depression or anxiety). Allegra may also interact with ketoconazole or erythromycin.

 

How Should Xyzal Be Taken?

Xyzal is available as 2.5 mg/5 mL (0.5 mg/mL) oral solution and as 5 mg breakable (scored) tablets, allowing for the administration of 2.5 mg, if needed. Xyzal can be taken without regard to food consumption.

How Should Allegra Be Taken?

Do not use

if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this product or any of its ingredients.

Ask a doctor before use if you have

kidney desease. Your doctor should determine if you need a different dose.

When using this product

  • do not take more than directed
  • do not take at the same time as aluminum or magnesium antacids
  • do not take with fruit juices

an allergic reaction to this product occurs. Seek medical help right away.

If pregnant or breast-feeding,

ask a health professional before use.
