Taurine

Taurine is an herbal supplement that can be used in the treatment for congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cystic fibrosis, and to prevent the buildup of plaque in the arteries throughout the body.

Taurine occurs naturally in the human brain. Taurine is an amino acid that occurs naturally in many foods in the human diet. It is also used in many energy drinks alongside caffeine.

Other uses and benefits include seizure disorders (epilepsy), autism, ADHD, continuous decline in vision (retinal degeneration), diabetes, alcoholism, improve mental performance and also as an antioxidant.

Taurine has shown to reduce blood pressure in human clinical studies.

In people with congestive heart failure, taurine appears to improve left ventricular function in patients with New York Heart Association functional class II to IV.

In treatment for acute hepatitis, taurine may improve liver function.

In animal studies taurine lowered lipid levels, however the results are contradictory in human studies.

Dosage Considerations

Congestive Heart Failure

2-6 g/day dosed orally either twice daily or three times daily

Acute Hepatitis

4 g dosed orally three times daily x 6 weeks

Steatorrhea in Children with Cystic Fibrosis

30 mg/kg day x 4 months in addition to pancreatic enzyme supplementation

Indicated for treatment of Cystathionine Beta-Synthase Deficient Homocystinuria.

Warnings

This medication contains taurine. Do not take mega taurine if you are allergic to taurine or any ingredients contained in this drug.

Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are hypersensitive to taurine.

Effects of Drug Abuse

There are no effects of drug abuse with the use of taurine.

Short-term Effects

There are no short-term effects from use of taurine.

Long-term Effects

There are no long-term effects from use of taurine.

Use caution if you are pregnant or lactating. Consult with your physician prior to use.

Monitor patients with congestive heart failure.
