Vemlidy (tenofovir alafenamide) and Intron A (Interferon alfa-2b) are used to treat chronic hepatitis B virus infection.

Vemlidy is used to treat chronic hepatitis B virus infection in adults with compensated liver disease.

Intron A is also used to treat hairy cell leukemia, malignant melanoma, follicular lymphoma, Kaposi's sarcoma caused by AIDS, certain types of genital warts, and chronic hepatitis C. Intron A is often used in combination with another drug called ribavirin (Rebetol).

Vemlidy and Intron A belong to different drug classes. Vemlidy is a hepatitis B virus (HBV) nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor and Intron A is an alpha interferon.

Side effects of Vemlidy and Intron A that are similar include fatigue/tiredness, cough, nausea, and back pain.

Side effects of Vemlidy that are different from Intron A include headache and abdominal pain.

Side effects of Intron A that are different from Vemlidy include injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness, burning, bleeding, itching, or skin changes), diarrhea, upset stomach, loss of appetite, dizziness, spinning sensation, dry mouth, sore throat, taste changes, vomiting, hair loss, and itching or skin rash.

Vemlidy may interact with drugs that induce P-gp activity, antivirals, aminoglycosides, high-dose or multiple nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), anticonvulsants, antimycobacterials, and St. John's wort.

Intron A may interact with zidovudine, theophylline, and medicines used to prevent organ transplant rejection.

Common side effects of Vemlidy include:

• headache,
• abdominal pain,
• fatigue,

• nausea, and
• back pain.

Common side effects of Intron A include:

• injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness, burning, bleeding, itching, or skin changes),
• diarrhea,
• upset stomach,
• loss of appetite,
• back pain,
• dizziness,
• spinning sensation,
• dry mouth,
• dry cough,
• sore throat,
• taste changes,
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• hair loss,
• tiredness, or itching or skin rash

Flu-like symptoms such as headache, tiredness, fever, chills, and muscle aches and pains may occur, especially when you first start Intron A. These side effects usually last about 1 day after the Intron A injection and improve or go away after a few weeks of continued use.

Vemlidy may interact with drugs that induce P-gp activity, antivirals, aminoglycosides, high-dose or multiple nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), anticonvulsants, antimycobacterials, and St. John's wort. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before using Vemlidy. There is a pregnancy exposure registry that monitors pregnancy outcomes in women exposed to during pregnancy. It is unknown if Vemlidy passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Intron A may interact with zidovudine, theophylline, or medicines used to prevent organ transplant rejection. Tell your doctor all medications you use. Intron A is not recommended for use during pregnancy due to possible harm to a fetus and the risk of serious side effects for the pregnant woman. Both males and females using this drug must use birth control (e.g., condoms, birth control pills) during treatment. Consult your doctor about birth control. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

The recommended dosage of Vemlidy is 25 mg (one tablet) taken orally once daily with food.

Intron A is given intramuscularly or subcutaneously under physician supervision. Dose is determined by the condition being treated, the patient's weight, and other factors.
