Are Jardiance and Baqsimi the Same Thing?

Jardiance (empagliflozin) and Baqsimi (glucagon) Nasal Powder are both agents used to control blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes.

Baqsimi Nasal Powder is used for emergency treatment of severe hypoglycemia in patients with diabetes ages 4 years and above and can be used by patients with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Jardiance is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Jardiance is also indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease.

Side effects of Baqsimi Nasal Powder and Jardiance that are similar include nausea.

Side effects of Baqsimi Nasal Powder that are different from Jardiance include vomiting, headache, upper respiratory tract irritation (i.e., runny nose, nasal discomfort, nasal congestion, cough, and nosebleed), watery eyes, eye redness, sneezing, and itchy nose, throat, and eyes.

Baqsimi Nasal Powder may interact with beta-blockers, indomethacin, and warfarin.

Jardiance may interact with diuretics (water pills) and insulin or insulin secretagogues.

Side effects of Jardiance that are different from Baqsimi Nasal Powder include dehydration, dizziness, lightheadedness, weakness, yeast infection, low blood sugar, upper respiratory tract infection, high cholesterol, joint pain, increased urination, urinary tract infection (UTI), thirst, and low blood pressure (hypotension).

What Are Possible Side Effects of Jardiance?

Common side effects of Jardiance include:

  • dehydration,
  • dizziness,
  • lightheadedness,
  • weakness,
  • yeast infection,
  • low blood sugar,
  • nausea,
  • upper respiratory tract infection,
  • high cholesterol,
  • joint pain,
  • increased urination,
  • urinary tract infection,
  • thirst, and
  • low blood pressure (hypotension).

What Are Possible Side Effects of Baqsimi?

Common side effects of Baqsimi include:

  • nausea,

Jardiance (empagliflozin) is an inhibitor of the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Jardiance is also indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease.

What Is Baqsimi?

Baqsimi (glucagon) Nasal Powder is an antihypoglycemic agent indicated for the treatment of severe hypoglycemia in patients with diabetes ages 4 years and above.

 

What Drugs Interact With Jardiance?

Jardiance may interact with diuretics, insulin or insulin secretagogues. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. During pregnancy, Jardiance should be taken only if prescribed. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

What Drugs Interact With Baqsimi?

Baqsimi Nasal Powder may interact with beta-blockers, indomethacin, and warfarin. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before using Baqsimi Nasal Powder; it is not expected to harm a fetus. It is unknown if Baqsimi Nasal Powder passes into breast milk. Glucagon is a peptide and would be expected to be broken down to its constituent amino acids in an infant's digestive tract and is therefore unlikely to cause harm to an exposed infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

 

How Should Jardiance Be Taken?

The recommended dose of Jardiance is 10 mg once daily in the morning, taken with or without food.

How Should Baqsimi Be Taken?

The recommended dose of Baqsimi Nasal Powder is 3 mg administered as one pump spray of the intranasal device into one nostril.
