Aygestin vs. Ortho Micronor

Aygestin (norethindrone) and Ortho Micronor (norethindrone) are forms of the female hormone progesterone used for birth control (contraception) to prevent pregnancy. Aygestin and Ortho Micronor is are also used to treat menstrual disorders, endometriosis, or abnormal vaginal bleeding caused by a hormone imbalance.

Side effects of Aygestin and Ortho Micronor that are similar include nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps, headache, dizziness, weight changes, increased acne, breast pain/swelling/tenderness, changes in sexual interest, increased hair growth, scalp hair loss, freckles or darkening of facial skin, vaginal itching or discharge, skin itching or rash, and changes in your menstrual periods.

Side effects of Aygestin that are different from Ortho Micronor include mood swings and trouble sleeping.

Side effects of Ortho Micronor that are different from Aygestin include tiredness, decreased breast size, and oily scalp.

Both Aygestin and Ortho Micronor may interact with griseofulvin, rifampin, St. John's wort, ketoconazole or itraconazole, barbiturates, and HIV medicines.

• yellowing eyes or skin.

• tiredness,
• breast pain/swelling/tenderness,
• decrease in breast size,
• freckles or darkening of facial skin,
• acne,
• oily scalp,
• hair loss,
• increased hair growth,
• weight gain,
• vaginal itching/discharge/infections,
• skin itching or rash,
• changes in menstrual periods, or
• decreased sex drive.

Tell your doctor if you have serious side effects of Ortho Micronor including:

• lumps in the breast,
• mental/mood changes (such as new/worsening depression),
• severe stomach or abdominal pain,
• unusual changes in vaginal bleeding (such as continuous spotting, sudden heavy bleeding, missed periods),
• dark urine, or
• yellowing eyes or skin

Aygestin may interact with griseofulvin, rifampin, St. John's wort, ketoconazole or itraconazole, barbiturates, or HIV medicines. Tell your doctor all medications you are taking. Smoking combined with this medication increases your risk for strokes, blood clots, high blood pressure, and heart attacks. Aygestin must not be used during pregnancy because it may harm a fetus, especially during the first 4 months of pregnancy. This drug passes into breast milk.

Ortho Micronor may interact with griseofulvin, rifampin, St. John's wort, ketoconazole or itraconazole, barbiturates, or HIV medicines. Tell your doctor all medications you are taking. Ortho Micronor should not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. This drug passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effect on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

The dosage and the duration of treatment with Aygestin is based on the patient's medical condition and response to therapy. Follow doctor's instructions. Withdrawal bleeding usually occurs within three to seven days after discontinuing Aygestin therapy.

Ortho Micronor must be taken exactly as directed. One tablet is taken every day, at the same time. Administration is continuous, with no interruption between pill packs.
