Are Aviane and Lutera the Same Thing?
Aviane (levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol) and Lutera (levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol tablets) are combinations of female hormones used as a contraceptive to prevent pregnancy.
Side effects of Aviane and Lutera that are similar include nausea (especially when you first start taking Aviane or Lutera), vomiting, headache, stomach cramping, bloating, dizziness, vaginal discomfort/irritation/itching, increased vaginal fluids/discharge, breast tenderness/enlargement/swelling, nipple discharge, freckles or darkening of facial skin, increased hair growth, loss of scalp hair, changes in weight or appetite, problems with contact lenses, decreased sex drive, acne (may improve or worsen), and spotting between periods or missed/irregular menstrual periods (especially during the first few months of use).
Side effects of Lutera that are different from Aviane include swelling of the ankles or feet (fluid retention).
Both Aviane and Lutera may interact with acetaminophen, prednisolone, theophylline, cyclosporine, St. John's wort, antibiotics, seizure medications, barbiturate sedatives, and HIV/AIDS medications.
Lutera may also interact with vitamin C.

Lutera passes into breast milk. This may affect milk production and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
How Should Aviane be Taken?
Aviane comes in a pack of 28 tablets. Take one orange active table daily for 21 consecutive days, followed by one light-green inert tablet for 7 consecutive days, according to the prescribed schedule.
How Should Lutera be Taken?
A Lutera pill pack contains 21 pills with active medication. It may also contain 7 inert reminder pills. Take one active pill (with hormones) once daily for 21 days in a row. If you are using a product with 28 tablets, take an inactive pill once daily for 7 days after you have taken the last active pill unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
