Are Unasyn and Cleocin the Same Thing?
Unasyn (ampicillin sodium/sulbactam sodium) and Cleocin (clindamycin) are antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections.
Unasyn and Cleocin are different types of antibiotics. Unasyn is a combination of a penicillin-type antibiotic and a beta-lactamase inhibitor and Cleocin is a lincosamide antibiotic.
Side effects of Unasyn and Cleocin that are similar include sore throat, skin rash or itching, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and vaginal itching or discharge.
Side effects of Unasyn that are different from Cleocin include fever, headache, body aches, bloating, gas, swollen/black/"hairy" tongue, thrush (white patches inside your mouth or throat), or pain, swelling, or irritation where the needle is placed.
Side effects of Cleocin that are different from Unasyn include joint pain, heartburn, or changes in bowel habits (especially in older adults).
Unasyn may interact with allopurinol or probenecid.
Cleocin may interact with other neuromuscular blocking agents and erythromycin.

How Should Cleocin Be Taken?
Apply a thin film of Cleocin twice daily to affected area. Cleocin T may interact with erythromycin topical or erythromycin taken by mouth. Tell your doctor all medications you are taking. The dose of Cleocin HCl for adults is 150 to 300 mg every 6 hours. For more severe infections is 300 to 450 mg every 6 hours. The dose of for pediatric patients is 8 to 16 mg/kg/day divided in three or four equal doses. For more severe infections, 16 to 20 mg/kg/day divided in three or four equal doses.
