Bonsity (teriparatide injection) and Actonel (risedronate sodium) are used to treat or prevent osteoporosis in men and women.

Bonsity is specifically used in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis at high risk for fracture; and in men with primary or hypogonadal osteoporosis at high risk for fracture; and for treatment of men and women with osteoporosis associated with sustained systemic glucocorticoid therapy at high risk for fracture.

Actonel is also used to treat Paget's disease of bone.

Bonsity and Actonel belong to different drug classes. Bonsity is a parathyroid hormone analog (PTH 134) and Actonel is a bisphosphonate.

Side effects of Bonsity and Actonel that are similar include joint pain, headache, diarrhea, and constipation.

Side effects of Bonsity that are different from Actonel include body pain, nausea, runny nose, dizziness, indigestion, cough, and sore throat.

Side effects of Actonel that are different from Bonsity include stomach pain, flu symptoms, muscle pain, and back pain.

Bonsity may interact with digoxin.

Actonel may interact with antacids, supplements, or medicines that contain aluminum, calcium, magnesium. Other minerals can interfere with how your body absorbs Actonel.

Common side effects of Bonsity include:

• nausea,
• runny nose,
• dizziness,
• headache,
• diarrhea,
• constipation,
• indigestion,
• cough, and
• sore throat

Common side effects of Actonel include:

• upset stomach
• stomach pain
• headache
• flu symptoms
• muscle pain
• diarrhea, constipation, or
• joint or back pain

Bonsity (teriparatide injection) is a parathyroid hormone analog (PTH 1- 34) indicated for treatment of postmenopausal women with osteoporosis at high risk for fracture; to increase bone mass in men with primary or hypogonadal osteoporosis at high risk for fracture; and for treatment of men and women with osteoporosis associated with sustained systemic glucocorticoid therapy at high risk for fracture.

Actonel (risedronate sodium) is a bisphosphonate used to treat or prevent osteoporosis in men and women, and is also used to treat Paget's disease of bone.

Bonsity may interact with digoxin. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Bonsity is not recommended for use during pregnancy; it is unknown how it would affect a fetus. It is unknown if Bonsity passes into breast milk. Because of a possible potential for osteosarcoma, breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with Bonsity.

Actonel may interact with antacids, supplements, or medicines that contain aluminum, calcium, magnesium. Other minerals can interfere with how your body absorbs this drug. It may also interact with aspirin or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Caution is advised if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant in the future. This medication may stay in your body for many years. Its effects on a fetus are not known. Consult your doctor. It is not known if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

The recommended dose of Bonsity is 20 mcg subcutaneously once a day. Bonsity may interact with digoxin.

Dosage of Actonel depends on the condition being treated.
