What Is Ancobon?
Ancobon (flucytosine) is an antifungal medication used to treat serious fungal infections of the blood, lungs, heart, central nervous system, and urinary tract. Ancobon is available in generic form.
What Are Side Effects of Ancobon?
Common side effects of Ancobon include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, dry mouth, headache, drowsiness, weakness, or poor coordination.
Dosage for Ancobon
The usual dosage of Ancobon is 50 to 150 mg/kg/day administered in divided doses at 6-hour intervals. Nausea or vomiting may be reduced or avoided if the capsules are given a few at a time over a 15-minute period.
What Drugs, Substances, or Supplements Interact with Ancobon?
Ancobon may interact with amphotericin B, or cytosine. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.
Ancobon During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
During pregnancy, Ancobon should be used only when prescribed. It is not recommended for use during the first 3 months of pregnancy. It may harm a fetus. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. It may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Breastfeeding while using this drug is not recommended.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
- slow heart rate, weak pulse, fainting, slow breathing;
- chest pain;
- confusion, hallucinations;
- a seizure (convulsions);
- pale skin, easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum);
- sudden weakness or ill feeling, fever, chills, sore throat, mouth sores, red or swollen gums, trouble swallowing;
- problems with hearing;
- low potassium--leg cramps, constipation, irregular heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, increased thirst or urination, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness or limp feeling;
- kidney problems--little or no urination, painful or difficult urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath; or
- liver problems--nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Common side effects may include:
- nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea;
- headache, dizziness;
- numbness, tingling, or burning pain in your hands or feet;
- dry mouth; or
- skin rash.

SIDE EFFECTS
The adverse reactions which have occurred during treatment with ANCOBON are grouped according to organ system affected.
Cardiovascular: Cardiac arrest, myocardial toxicity, ventricular dysfunction.
Respiratory: Respiratory arrest, chest pain, dyspnea.
Dermatologic: Rash, pruritus, urticaria, photosensitivity.
Gastrointestinal: Nausea, emesis, abdominal pain, diarrhea, anorexia, dry mouth, duodenal ulcer, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, acute hepatic injury including hepatic necrosis with possible fatal outcome in debilitated patients, hepatic dysfunction, jaundice, ulcerative colitis, enterocolitis, bilirubin elevation, increased hepatic enzymes.
Genitourinary: Azotemia, creatinine and BUN elevation, crystalluria, renal failure.
Hematologic: Anemia, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, eosinophilia, leukopenia, pancytopenia, thrombocytopenia, and fatal cases of bone marrow aplasia.
Neurologic: Ataxia, hearing loss, headache, paresthesia, parkinsonism, peripheral neuropathy, pyrexia, vertigo, sedation, convulsions.
Psychiatric: Confusion, hallucinations, psychosis.
Miscellaneous: Fatigue, hypoglycemia, hypokalemia, weakness, allergic reactions, Lyell's syndrome.
