Dosing and uses of VoSol (acetic acid otic)

 

Adult dosage forms and strengths

otic solution

  • 2%

 

Otitis Externa

Remove all cerumen and debris

Insert cotton wick saturated with acetic acid otic solution into ear canal; alternatively, may saturate wick following insertion

Keep wick in place for at least 24 hr and maintain moisture by adding 3-5 gtt q5-6hr

Remove wick after 24 hr; thereafter, continue to instill 5 gtt to affected ear(s) three to four times daily for as long as indicated

 

Pediatric dosage forms and strengths

  • Remove all cerumen and debris
  • Insert cotton wick saturated with acetic acid otic solution into ear canal; alternatively, may saturate wick following insertion
  • Keep wick in place for at least 24 hr and maintain moisture by adding 3-5 gtt q5-6hr
  • Remove wick after 24 hr; thereafter, continue to instill 5 gtt to affected ear(s) three to four times daily for as long as indicated
  • In children, 3-4 gtts may be sufficient because of smaller capacity of ear canal

Pregnancy category: C

Lactation: Unknown whether distributed in breast milk

 

Pregnancy categories

A: Generally acceptable. Controlled studies in pregnant women show no evidence of fetal risk.

B: May be acceptable. Either animal studies show no risk but human studies not available or animal studies showed minor risks and human studies done and showed no risk.

C: Use with caution if benefits outweigh risks. Animal studies show risk and human studies not available or neither animal nor human studies done.

D: Use in LIFE-THREATENING emergencies when no safer drug available. Positive evidence of human fetal risk.

X: Do not use in pregnancy. Risks involved outweigh potential benefits. Safer alternatives exist.
