Other Indications & Uses

Ocular corticosteroid, antiinflammatory agent

Effective in iritis, keratitis, conjunctivitis, and many ocular inflammatory diseases; bacterial and viral infections require concomitant antibacterial and antiviral coverage, respectively

Warnings

Contraindications

Epithelial defect, glaucoma, herpes, vaccinia, varicella, and other viral diseases of cornea or conjunctiva, mycobacterial infection of eye, fungal diseases of ocular structures, hypersensitivity to any ingredients

 

Cautions

Ocular steroids must be used cautiously

Prednisolone acetate suspension 1% is one of most potent agents available; prednisolone phosphate soln slightly less effective

 

Pregnancy and lactation

Pregnancy category: C

Lactation: not known if distributed in milk

 

Pregnancy categories

A: Generally acceptable. Controlled studies in pregnant women show no evidence of fetal risk.

B: May be acceptable. Either animal studies show no risk but human studies not available or animal studies showed minor risks and human studies done and showed no risk.

C: Use with caution if benefits outweigh risks. Animal studies show risk and human studies not available or neither animal nor human studies done.

D: Use in LIFE-THREATENING emergencies when no safer drug available. Positive evidence of human fetal risk.

X: Do not use in pregnancy. Risks involved outweigh potential benefits. Safer alternatives exist.

Pharmacology of Pred Forte, Pred Mild (prednisolone ophthalmic)

Mechanism of action

Inhibits edema, fibrin deposition, capillary dilation, and phagocytic response of acute inflammation; also inhibits capillary proliferation, collagen deposition, and scar formation

 

Pharmacokinetics

Absorption: Corneal penetration is good; absorbed into aqueous humor and some systemic absorption

Excretion: Urine
