Gastric Hyperacidity, Heartburn

Regular Strength Tablets: Chew 2-4 tablets PO QID prn; not to exceed 16 tablets/day

Renal failure

Magnesium restricted diet

May increase or decrease rate and/or degree of absorption of concomitantly administered oral drugs by changing GI transit time, pH, or by cationic binding

Pregnancy category: C

Lactation: Unknown whether distributed in breast milk

 

Pregnancy categories

A: Generally acceptable. Controlled studies in pregnant women show no evidence of fetal risk.

B: May be acceptable. Either animal studies show no risk but human studies not available or animal studies showed minor risks and human studies done and showed no risk.

C: Use with caution if benefits outweigh risks. Animal studies show risk and human studies not available or neither animal nor human studies done.

D: Use in LIFE-THREATENING emergencies when no safer drug available. Positive evidence of human fetal risk.

X: Do not use in pregnancy. Risks involved outweigh potential benefits. Safer alternatives exist.

Pharmacology of Gaviscon Regular Strength Tablets (aluminum hydroxide/magnesium trisilicate)

Duration: 2-60 min (fasting); up to 3 hr (1 hr pc)

 

Excretion

Feces: 95% aluminium ions; 70% magnesium ions

Urine: 5% aluminum ions; up to 30% magnesium ions

 

Mechanism of action

Neutralizes gastric acidity by increasing gastric pH
