Contraindications

Sensitivity to sulfa compounds or other components

 

Cautions

May result in the overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms including fungi

Severe reactions including aplastic anemia, agranylocytosis, and other blood dyscrasias reported

Dermatologic severe reactions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis reported

Fatal hepatic necrosis reported

Pregnancy category: C

Lactation: Safety in nursing infants unknown; not recommended

 

Pregnancy categories

A: Generally acceptable. Controlled studies in pregnant women show no evidence of fetal risk.

B: May be acceptable. Either animal studies show no risk but human studies not available or animal studies showed minor risks and human studies done and showed no risk.

C: Use with caution if benefits outweigh risks. Animal studies show risk and human studies not available or neither animal nor human studies done.

D: Use in LIFE-THREATENING emergencies when no safer drug available. Positive evidence of human fetal risk.

Pharmacology of Bleph 10, Sodium Sulamyd (sulfacetamide ophthalmic)

Mechanism of action

Interfere with utilization of para-aminobenzoic or para-aminobenzoic glutamic acids by bacteria, thus inhibiting the biosynthesis of folic acid which is essential for the growth of susceptible organisms
