Vraylar (cariprazine) and Zyprexa (olanzapine) are atypical antipsychotics indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia bipolar disorder.

Side effects of Vraylar and Zyprexa that are similar include sleepiness/drowsiness, restlessness, weight gain, headache, stomach/abdominal pain, constipation, pain in the extremities, dry mouth, back pain, and dizziness.

Side effects of Vraylar that are different from Zyprexa include extrapyramidal symptoms (muscle spasms, muscle rigidity, tremor, jerking movements), agitation, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, toothache, anxiety, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and cough.

Side effects of Zyprexa that are different from Vraylar include an inability to sit still (akathisia), lightheadedness, tiredness, increased appetite, memory problems, stomach upset, loss of bladder control, numbness or tingly feeling, breast swelling or discharge (in women or men), and missed menstrual periods.

Both Vraylar and Zyprexa may interact with CYP3A4 inducers (such as rifampin and carbamazepine).

Vraylar may also interact with CYP3A4 inhibitors (such as itraconazole and ketoconazole).

Zyprexa may also interact with other medicines that can make you sleepy or slow your breathing (such as cold or allergy medicines, narcotics, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicines for seizures, depression, or anxiety), heart or blood pressure medications, diazepam, olanzapine, omeprazole, and medications to treat Parkinson's disease.

Side effects of Vraylar include:

• extrapyramidal symptoms (muscle spasms, muscle rigidity, tremor, jerking movements),

• nausea,
• vomiting,
• sleepiness,
• restlessness,
• weight gain,
• headache,
• insomnia,
• abdominal pain,

• back pain,
• dizziness, and
• cough.

Common side effects of Zyprexa include:

• stomach upset,
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling),
• constipation,
• headache,
• confusion,
• memory problems,
• loss of balance or coordination,
• blurred vision,
• double vision,
• eye redness,
• lightheadedness,
• dizziness,
• spinning sensation,
• drowsiness,
• sleep problems (insomnia),
• stuffy nose,
• itching, or
• rash, especially during the first few days as your body adjusts to this medication.

Tell your doctor if you experience serious side effects of Zyprexa including:

• fever,
• chills,
• flu symptoms,
• slow heart rate,
• feeling like you might pass out,
• seizures (convulsions), or
• jaundice (yellowing of your skin or eyes).

Vraylar (cariprazine) is an atypical antipsychotic indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia, and the acute treatment of manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder.

Zyprexa (olanzapine) is an atypical antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia and manic episodes of bipolar disorder.

Vraylar may interact with CYP3A4 inducers and inhibitors. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

Zyprexa may interact with other medicines that can make you sleepy or slow your breathing (such as cold or allergy medicines, narcotic pain medicines, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicines for depression, seizure, anxiety), and heart or blood pressure medications. Zyprexa may also interact with carbamazepine, diazepam, fluoxetine, olanzapine, fluvoxamine, omeprazole, rifampin, or medications to treat Parkinson's disease.

The starting dose of Vraylar is 1.5 mg once daily.

The recommended starting dose of Zyprexa is six grams a day for the first 48 to 72 hours of treatment. Thereafter, the dosage can usually be reduced to approximately 4 grams a day. Zyprexa may interact with pyridostigmine, donepezil, galantamine, rivastigmine, or tacrine. Tell your doctor all prescription and over-the-counter medications and supplements you use. Zyprexa should be used during pregnancy only when prescribed. It is not known if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
