Are Xyzal and Clarinex the Same Thing?
Xyzal (levocetirizine dihydrochloride) and Clarinex (desloratadine) are antihistamines indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with allergies, such as sneezing, watery eyes, and runny nose.
Clarinex is also used to treat skin hives and itching in people with chronic skin reactions.
Xyzal and Clarinex are available over-the-counter (OTC).
Side effects of Xyzal and Clarinex that are similar include drowsiness, fatigue, tired feeling, sore throat, cough, diarrhea, and dry mouth.
Side effects of Xyzal that are different from Clarinex include weakness, stuffy nose, sinus pain, vomiting, constipation, and weight gain.
Side effects of Clarinex that are different from Xyzal include muscle pain, nausea, indigestion, loss of appetite, dizziness, headache, trouble sleeping, nosebleeds, stomach upset, and fever.
Xyzal may interact with alcohol, other medicines that can make you drowsy (cold or allergy medicines, sedatives, narcotics, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicines for seizures, depression, or anxiety), ritonavir, and theophylline.

Clarinex (desloratadine) is an antihistamine used to treat the symptoms of allergies, such as sneezing, watery eyes, and runny nose. Clarinex is also used to treat skin hives and itching in people with chronic skin reactions. Clarinex is available over-the-counter and in generic form.
What Drugs Interact With Xyzal?
Xyzal may interact with alcohol, other medicines that can make you drowsy (cold or allergy medicine, sedatives, narcotics, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, medicine for seizures, depression or anxiety). Xyzal may also interact with ritonavir or theophylline.
What Drugs Interact With Clarinex?
There may be other drugs that can affect Clarinex. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor. Clarinex should be used only when prescribed during pregnancy. This drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
How Should Xyzal Be Taken?
Xyzal is available as 2.5 mg/5 mL (0.5 mg/mL) oral solution and as 5 mg breakable (scored) tablets, allowing for the administration of 2.5 mg, if needed. Xyzal can be taken without regard to food consumption.
