Are Unasyn and Rocephin the Same Thing?

Unasyn (ampicillin sodium/sulbactam sodium) and Rocephin (ceftriaxone sodium) are antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections.

Rocephin is also used to treat severe or life-threatening infections such as meningitis.

Unasyn and Rocephin are different types of antibiotics. Unasyn is a combination of a penicillin-type antibiotic and a beta-lactamase inhibitor and Rocephin is a cephalosporin antibiotic.

Side effects of Unasyn and Rocephin that are similar include headache, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, vaginal itching or discharge, and injection site reactions (swelling, redness, pain, a hard lump, irritation, or soreness).

Side effects of Unasyn that are different from Rocephin include fever, sore throat, rash, body aches, stomach pain, bloating, gas, itching, swollen/black/"hairy" tongue, and thrush (white patches inside your mouth or throat).

Side effects of Rocephin that are different from Unasyn include loss of appetite, upset stomach, dizziness, overactive reflexes, pain or swelling in your tongue, and sweating.

Unasyn may interact with allopurinol or probenecid.

Rocephin may interact with other drugs.

  • vaginal itching or discharge.

How Should Unasyn Be Taken?

Unasyn is administered orally in the form of tablets.

How Should Rocephin Be Taken?

The usual adult daily dose is 1 to 2 grams given once a day (or in equally divided doses twice a day) depending on the type and severity of infection. Pediatric dosing depends on the condition being treated and the child's weight. Other drugs may interact with Rocephin.
