Requip vs. Rytary

Are Requip and Rytary the Same Thing?

Requip (ropinirole) and Rytary (carbidopa and levodopa) are used to treat symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Requip is also used to treat restless legs syndrome (RLS).

Rytary is also used to treat post-encephalitic Parkinsonism and Parkinsonism that may follow carbon monoxide intoxication or manganese intoxication.

Requip is a non-ergoline dopamine agonist and Rytary is a combination an inhibitor of aromatic amino acid decarboxylation and an aromatic amino acid.

Side effects of Requip and Rytary that are similar include nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, sleep problems (insomnia), anxiety, or constipation.

Side effects of Requip that are different from Rytary include stomach pain, loss of appetite, worsened RLS symptoms early in the morning, diarrhea, sweating, drowsiness, agitation, flushing, weakness, chest pain, leg swelling, high or low blood pressure, lightheadedness or fainting, muscle spasm, numbness, spinning sensation, abdominal pain, indigestion, gas, palpitations, fast heart rate, sore throat, urinary tract infection (UTI), or vision problems.

Side effects of Rytary that are different from Requip include abnormal dreams, involuntary movements, or low blood pressure and dizziness upon standing.

Both Requip and Rytary may interact with metoclopramide.

Requip may also interact with alcohol, other drugs that make you sleepy (sleeping pills, narcotics, muscle relaxers, or medicines for anxiety, depression, or seizures), levodopa, ciprofloxacin, fluvoxamine, omeprazole, medications used to treat nausea and vomiting, medications used to treat mental illness, or estrogen.

Rytary may also interact with MAO inhibitors, phenothiazines, butyrophenones, risperidone, isoniazid, iron salts, or multi-vitamins containing iron salts.

Withdrawal symptoms may occur if you suddenly stop taking Requip.

What Is Requip?

Requip (ropinirole) is a non-ergoline dopamine agonist used to treat symptoms of Parkinson's disease, such as stiffness, tremors, muscle spasms, and poor muscle control. Requip is also used to treat restless legs syndrome (RLS). Requip is available in generic form.

What Is Rytary?

Rytary (carbidopa and levodopa) is a combination an inhibitor of aromatic amino acid decarboxylation and an aromatic amino acid, used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, post-encephalitic Parkinsonism, and Parkinsonism that may follow carbon monoxide intoxication or manganese intoxication.

What Drugs Interact With Requip?

Requip may interact with levodopa, ciprofloxacin, fluvoxamine, metoclopramide, omeprazole, medication used to treat nausea and vomiting or mental illness, or estrogen. Tell your doctor all medications you use. During pregnancy, Requip should be used only if prescribed. It is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Requip may reduce breast milk production. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Withdrawal symptoms such as fever, muscle stiffness, and confusion may occur if you stop the medication suddenly or if you change doses.

What Drugs Interact With Rytary?

Rytary may interact with MAO inhibitors, phenothiazines, butyrophenones, risperidone, metoclopramide, isoniazid, iron salts, or multi-vitamins containing iron salts. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. During pregnancy, Rytary should be used only if prescribed. These drugs may pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

How Should Requip Be Taken?

The recommended dose of Requip is 40 to 320 mcg twice daily for adults and 40 to 80 mcg twice daily for children. If you are also using a bronchodilator, use it first before using the beclomethasone inhaler. There may be other drugs that can interact with Requip.

How Should Rytary Be Taken?

The recommended starting dosage of Rytary is 23.75 mg/95 mg taken orally three times a day for the first 3 days. On the fourth day of treatment, the dosage of Rytary may be increased to 36.25 mg/145 mg taken three times a day.
