Nourianz (istradefylline) and Osmolex ER are used to treat different aspects of Parkinson's disease.

Nourianz is indicated as adjunctive treatment to levodopa/carbidopa in adult patients with Parkinson's disease experiencing "off" episodes.

Osmolex ER is indicated for the treatment of drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions in adult patients with Parkinson's disease.

Nourianz and Osmolex ER belong to different drug classes. Nourianz is an adenosine receptor antagonist and Osmolex ER is an anti-Parkinson's agent.

Side effects of Nourianz and Osmolex ER that are similar include dizziness, constipation, nausea, hallucinations, and sleep problems (insomnia).

Side effects of Nourianz that are different from Osmolex ER include involuntary muscle movements.

Side effects of Osmolex ER that are different from Nourianz include lightheadedness, depression, anxiety and irritability, confusion, loss of appetite, dry mouth, loss of coordination, mottled purplish skin discoloration, swelling of extremities, dizziness on standing, headache, drowsiness, nervousness, strange dreams, agitation, dry nose, diarrhea, and fatigue.

Nourianz may interact with itraconazole, ketoconazole, clarithromycin, rifampin, St. John's wort, midazolam, atorvastatin, seizure medications, and digoxin.

Osmolex ER may interact with anticholinergic drugs, drugs affecting urinary pH (e.g., carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, sodium bicarbonate), live influenza vaccines, and alcohol.

Withdrawal symptoms such as fever, confusion, severe muscle stiffness, psychosis, personality changes, agitation, aggressive behavior, hallucinations, paranoia, other psychotic or paranoia reactions may occur if you suddenly stop taking Osmolex ER.

Common side effects of Nourianz include:

Osmolex ER (amantadine extended-release tablets) is indicated for the treatment of drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions in adult patients with Parkinson's disease.

Nourianz may interact with itraconazole, ketoconazole, clarithromycin, carbamazepine, rifampin, phenytoin, St. John's wort, midazolam, atorvastatin, and digoxin. Nourianz is not recommended for use during pregnancy; it may harm a fetus. Women of childbearing potential are advised to use contraception during treatment with Nourianz. It is unknown if Nourianz passes into breast milk or how it would affect a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Osmolex ER may interact with anticholinergic drugs, drugs affecting urinary pH (e.g., carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, sodium bicarbonate), live influenza vaccines, and alcohol. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Osmolex ER is not recommended for use during pregnancy; it may harm a fetus. Osmolex ER passes into breast milk but its effects on nursing infants is unknown. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

The recommended dosage of Nourianz is 20 mg orally once daily. The dosage may be increased to a maximum of 40 mg once daily.

The initial dosage of Osmolex ER is 129 mg orally once daily in the morning. The dosage may be increased in weekly intervals to a maximum daily dose of 322 mg once daily in the morning.
