Zebeta (bisoprolol fumarate) and Lopressorr and Toprol XL (metoprolol tartrate) beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agents (beta-blockers) used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure).

Lopressorr and Toprol XL are also used to treat angina and heart attacks.

Side effects of Zebeta and Lopressorr and Toprol XL that are similar include tiredness, drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, sleep problems (insomnia), depression, anxiety, or loss of interest in sex.

Side effects of Zebeta that are different from Lopressorr and Toprol XL include slow heartbeat, lightheadedness on standing, spinning sensation, stomach pain, increased urination, runny or stuffy nose, ringing in your ears, weakness, restless feeling, joint or muscle pain, and itching or skin rash.

Side effects of Lopressorr and Toprol XL that are different from Zebeta include gas, heartburn, impotence, difficulty having an orgasm, headache, nervousness, and rash.

Both Zebeta and Lopressorr and Toprol XL may interact with heart medicines, clonidine, diabetes medications, and medicine for asthma or other breathing disorders.

Zebeta may also interact with other beta-blockers, digitalis, disopyramide, guanethidine, rifampin, and insulin.

Lopressorr and Toprol XL may also interact wit cimetidine, digoxin, ritonavir, terbinafine, diuretics (water pills), cold medicines, stimulant medicines, diet pills, anti-malaria medications, medicines to treat depression or mental illness, and MAO inhibitors.

Common side effects of Zebeta include:

Tell your doctor if you experience unlikely but serious side effects of Zebeta including:

• very slow heartbeat,
• severe dizziness,
• fainting,
• blue fingers/toes,
• trouble breathing, or
• mental/mood changes (such as confusion, mood swings, depression).

Common side effects of Lopressor, Toprol XL include:

• decreased sex drive, impotence,

Serious side effects of Lopressor include

• wheezing,
• shortness of breath,
• swelling, or
• irregular rapid heartbeats.

Zebeta (bisoprolol fumarate) is a type of antihypertensive drug called a beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent (beta blocker) used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure).

Lopressor, Toprol XL (metoprolol tartrate) Tablets and Injection is a selective beta-adrenoreceptor blocking agent (beta-blocker) used to treat high blood presure (hypertension), angina, and heart attacks.

Zebeta may interact with other medications including other beta blockers, heart medicines, clonidine, digitalis, disopyramide, guanethidine, rifampin, insulin or diabetes medication you take by mouth, and medicine for asthma or other breathing disorders.

Patients with bronchospastic disease should not take Lopressor, Toprol XL. Lopressor, Toprol XL may interact with cimetidine, clonidine, digoxin, ritonavir, terbinafine, diuretics (water pills), cold medicines, stimulant medicines, diet pills, anti-malaria medications, medicines to treat depression or mental illness, MAO inhibitors, diabetes medications, heart medications, or medicines for asthma or other breathing disorders. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of Lopressor in pregnant women, and caution should be exercised when Lopressor is administered to a woman breastfeeding an infant as small amounts of Lopressor are excreted in breast milk. Safety and effectiveness of Lopressor, Toprol XL in pediatric patients have not been established.

The dose of Zebeta is individualized to the needs of the patient, ranging from 2.5 to 20 mg once daily.

Lopressor, Toprol XL is available as 50 and 100 mg strength tablets for oral administration and as (metoprolol tartrate) Injection, USP in 5 mg strength, in 5 ml ampoules for IV administration. Usual oral dosage is 100 mg per day in single or divided doses; IV begins with a 5 mg injection.
