Desoxyn (methamphetamine) and Ionamin (phentermine resin) are central nervous system stimulants used together with diet and exercise to treat obesity.

Desoxyn is also used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The brand name Ionamin is discontinued, but generic versions may be available.

Side effects of Desoxyn and Ionamin that are similar include headache, dizziness, sleep problems (insomnia), dry mouth, unpleasant taste in your mouth, diarrhea, constipation, increased or decreased interest in sex, or impotence.

Side effects of Desoxyn that are different from Ionamin include loss of appetite, weight loss, or difficulty having an orgasm.

Side effects of Ionamin that are different from Desoxyn include irritability, restlessness, hyperactivity, nausea, vomiting, or tremors.

Both Desoxyn and Ionamin may interact with blood pressure medications, insulin or oral diabetes medications, or antidepressants.

Desoxyn may also interact with cold medicines (decongestants), phenothiazines, stomach acid medicine (including Alka-Seltzer or sodium bicarbonate), medications to treat mental illness, or seizure medicines.

Withdrawal symptoms may occur if you suddenly stop taking Desoxyn.

Desoxyn (methamphetamine) is a central nervous system stimulant that is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Desoxyn is also used to treat obesity after other diets or medications have been tried without successful weight loss.

Ionamin (phentermine resin) is a stimulant used together with diet and exercise to treat obesity (overweight) in people with risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes.

Desoxyn may interact with insulin, cold medicines (decongestants), phenothiazines, or antidepressants. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Metamphetamine may be harmful to an unborn baby. It could also cause premature birth, low birth weight, or withdrawal symptoms in a newborn if the mother takes methamphetamine during pregnancy. Methamphetamine can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. Methamphetamine is a drug of abuse and can be habit-forming.

Ionamin may interact with blood pressure medications, insulin or oral diabetes medications, guanethidine, or antidepressants.

For treatment of children 6 years or older with a behavioral syndrome characterized by moderate to severe distractibility, short attention span, hyperactivity, emotional lability and impulsivity, an initial dose of 5 mg Desoxyn once or twice a day is recommended. To treat obesity in adults, one 5 mg tablet of Desoxyn should be taken one-half hour before each meal.

The dose of Ionamin is one capsule daily, before breakfast or 10-14 hours before retiring.
