Procardia (nifedipine) and Trandate (labetalol) are used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure).

Procardia is also used to treat angina (chest pain).

Procardia and Trandate belong to different drug classes. Procardia is a calcium channel blocker and Trandate is a beta-blocker.

Side effects of Procardia and Trandate that are similar include dizziness, tired feeling, or nausea.

Side effects of Procardia that are different from Trandate include weakness, swelling ankles/feet, joint pain, leg cramps, headache, drowsiness, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, sleep problems (insomnia), rash or itching, urinating more than usual, or flushing (warmth/redness/tingly feeling under your skin).

Side effects of Trandate that are different from Procardia include spinning sensation, upset stomach, stuffy nose, or difficulty having an orgasm. Scalp tingling may occur as your body adjusts to Trandate.

Both Procardia and Trandate may interact with other heart medications to treat the same or another condition.

Procardia may also interact with grapefruit and grapefruit juice, cimetidine, erythromycin, itraconazole or ketoconazole, carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampin, or rifabutin.

Trandate may also interact with allergy treatments, clonidine, guanabenz, MAO inhibitors, diabetes medications, medicines for asthma or other breathing disorders, cold medicines, stimulant medicines, or diet pills.

Common side effects of Procardia include:

• dizziness,
• weakness,
• swelling ankles/feet,
• joint pain,
• leg cramps,
• headache,
• drowsiness,
• tired feeling,
• nausea,
• diarrhea,
• constipation,
• stomach pain,
• sleep problems (insomnia),
• rash or itching,
• urinating more than usual, or
• flushing (warmth/redness/tingly feeling under your skin).

Tell your doctor if you experience unlikely but serious side effects of Procardia including:

• fast/irregular/pounding heartbeat, or
• fainting.

Common side effects of Trandate include:

• dizziness,
• spinning sensation,
• tiredness,
• nausea,
• upset stomach,
• stuffy nose,
• tired feeling, or
• difficulty having an orgasm.
• Scalp tingling may occur as your body adjusts to Trandate.

Procardia may interact with other heart medications to treat the same or another condition, cimetidine, erythromycin, itraconazole or ketoconazole, carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampin, or rifabutin. Tell your doctor all medications you use. During pregnancy, Procardia should be used only when prescribed. This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Trandate may interact with allergy treatments, clonidine, guanabenz, MAO inhibitors, diabetes medication, heart medication, medicine for asthma or other breathing disorders, cold medicines, stimulant medicines, or diet pills.

The usual starting dose of Procardia is one 10 mg capsule, 3 times/day. The usual effective dose range is 10–20 mg three times daily.

The recommended initial dosage of Trandate is 100 mg twice daily. The usual maintenance dose range is 200 - 400 mg twice daily.
