ProAir vs. Flovent

ProAir (albuterol sulfate) and Flovent (fluticasone propionate) are used to prevent and treat wheezing and shortness of breath caused by breathing problems such as asthma.

ProAir is also used to prevent and treat breathing problems caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

ProAir and Flovent belong to different drug classes. ProAir is a bronchodilator and Flovent is a steroid.

Side effects of ProAir and Flovent that are similar include headache, sore throat, cough, hoarseness, and runny or stuffy nose.

Side effects of ProAir that are different from Flovent include nervousness, shaking (tremor), dizziness, dry mouth/throat, nausea, vomiting, sleep problems (insomnia), muscle pain, and diarrhea.

Side effects of Flovent that are different from ProAir include white patches in your mouth/on your tongue, signs of infection (fever, chills), vision problems, increased thirst or urination, easy bruising or bleeding, mental/mood changes (such as depression, mood swings, agitation), bone pain, and wheezing.

Both ProAir and Flovent may interact with antidepressants.

ProAir may also interact with other inhaled medicines or bronchodilators, digoxin, diuretics (water pills), beta blockers, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

Flovent may also interact with conivaptan, diclofenac, imatinib, isoniazid, antibiotics, antifungal medications, heart or blood pressure medication, and HIV/AIDS medicines.

• mouth/throat dryness or irritation,
• sore throat,
• cough,
• nausea,
• vomiting,

• sleep problems (insomnia),

Common side effects of Flovent include:

• hoarseness,
• sore throat,
• white patches in your mouth/on your tongue,
• signs of infection (fever, chills, cough, persistent sore throat),
• vision problems,
• increased thirst or urination,
• easy bruising or bleeding,
• mental/mood changes (such as depression, mood swings, agitation),
• bone pain,
• wheezing,
• runny or stuffy nose, or
• headache.

Infrequently, Flovent may cause sudden severe wheezing or trouble breathing immediately after you use it. If this occurs, use your quick-relief inhaler and get medical help right away.

Proair (Flovent) is a bronchodilator that relaxes muscles in the airways and increases air flow to the lungs used to prevent and treat wheezing and shortness of breath caused by breathing problems such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Proair is also used to prevent exercise-induced asthma.

Flovent (fluticasone propionate) is a steroid used to prevent asthma attacks. It will not treat an asthma attack that has already begun.

ProAir may interact with other inhaled medicines, other asthma medicines, beta-blockers, diuretics, digoxin, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and antidepressants. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

ProAir is a dry powder inhaler supplied for 200 measured inhalation doses.

Flovent should be orally inhaled only in patients aged 12 years and older. The recommended starting dose ranges from 88-880 mcg twice daily. The maximum recommended dose is 880 mcg twice daily.
