Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin) and Primsol (trimethoprim hydrochloride oral solution) are antibiotics prescribed to treat or prevent urinary tract infections.

Primsol is also used to treat middle ear infections (acute otitis media).

Macrodantin and Primsol are different types of antibiotics. Macrodantin is a nitrofuran antibiotic Primsol is an aminopyrimidine antibiotic.

Side effects of Macrodantin and Primsol that are similar include rash, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Side effects of Macrodantin that are different from Primsol include headache, itching, nausea, upset stomach, loss of appetite, rust-colored or brownish urine, and vaginal itching or discharge.

Side effects of Primsol that are different from Macrodantin include abdominal pain.

Macrodantin may interact with antacids, magnesium salicylate, choline magnesium salicylate, and probenecid.

Primsol may interact with phenytoin.

Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin) is an antibiotic prescribed to treat or prevent urinary tract infections. Macrodantin is available in generic form.

Primsol (trimethoprim hydrochloride oral solution) is an antibacterial solution indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms in the following conditions: acute otitis media due to susceptible strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenza, and treatment of initial episodes of uncomplicated urinary tract infections due to susceptible strains of: Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter species and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species, including S. saprophyticus.

Macrobid may also interact with magnesium salicylate or choline magnesium salicylate.

Primsol may interact with phenytoin. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. During pregnancy, Primsol should be taken only if prescribed. Primsol may interfere with folic acid metabolism. Primsol passes into breast milk and may interfere with folic acid metabolism. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Macrodantin should be given with food to improve drug absorption and, in some patients, tolerance. Adults should take 50-100 mg four times a day-the lower dosage level is recommended for uncomplicated urinary tract infections.

The recommended dose of Primsol for pediatric patients with acute otitis media is 10 mg/kg trimethoprim per 24 hours, given in divided doses every 12 hours for 10 days. The usual oral adult dosage of Primsol to treat urinary tract infections is 100 mg (10 mL) every 12 hours or 200 mg (20 mL) every 24 hours, each for 10 days.
