Are Ibsrela and Viberzi the Same Thing?

Ibsrela (tenapanor) and Viberzi (eluxadoline) are used to treat different symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Ibsrela is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults.

Viberzi is used in adults to treat irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D).

Ibsrela and Viberzi belong to different drug classes. Ibsrela is a sodium/hydrogen exchanger 3 (NHE3) inhibitor and Viberzi is a mu-opioid receptor agonist.

Side effects of Ibsrela and Viberzi that are similar include abdominal distension/bloating, gas (flatulence), and dizziness.

Side effects of Ibsrela that are different from Viberzi include diarrhea.

Side effects of Viberzi that are different from Ibsrela include constipation, nausea, abdominal pain, upper respiratory tract infection, vomiting, runny or stuffy nose, bronchitis, rash, and fatigue.

Ibsrela may interact with other drugs.

Viberzi may interact with cyclosporine, gemfibrozil, antiretrovirals, rifampin, eltrombopag, ciprofloxacin, fluconazole, clarithromycin, antidepressants, alosetron, anticholinergics, opioids, rosuvastatin, alfentanil, dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, pimozide, quinidine, sirolimus, or tacrolimus.

What Drugs Interact With Ibsrela?

Ibsrela may interact with other drugs. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before using Ibsrela; maternal use is not expected to result in fetal exposure to the drug. It is unknown if Ibsrela passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

What Drugs Interact With Viberzi?

Viberzi may interact with other irritable bowel medications, narcotic pain medicines, or heart rhythm medications.

Viberzi may also interact with cyclosporine, gemfibrozil, antiretrovirals, rifampin, eltrombopag, ciprofloxacin, fluconazole, clarithromycin, paroxetine, bupropion, anticholinergics, opioids, rosuvastatin, dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, pimozide, sirolimus, or tacrolimus.

 

How Should Ibsrela Be Taken?

The recommended dosage of Ibsrela in adults is 50 mg, orally twice daily.

How Should Viberzi Be Taken?

The recommended dosage of Viberzi in adults is 100 mg twice daily, taken with food.
