Dovato vs. Odefsey

Dovato (dolutegravir and lamivudine) and Odefsey (emtricitabine, rilpivirine, and tenofovir alafenamide) are combinations of medicines used as a complete regimen to treat human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection with no antiretroviral treatment history and with no known substitutions associated with resistance to the individual components of Dovato or Odefsey.

Dovato and Odefsey both contain a nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). Dovato also contains an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) while Odefsey also contains a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI).

Side effects of Dovato and Odefsey that are similar include headache, nausea, insomnia, and dizziness.

Side effects of Dovato that are different from Odefsey include diarrhea and fatigue.

Side effects of Odefsey that are different from Dovato include depressive disorders (depressed mood, depression, general unease, mood changes, negative thoughts, suicide attempts, suicidal ideation), drowsiness, abdominal pain, rash, weight gain, and redistribution of body fat.

Both Dovato and Odefsey may interact with antacids and antimycobacterials.

Dovato may also interact with other antiretroviral drugs for the treatment of HIV-1 infection, dofetilide, metformin, anticonvulsants, St. John's wort, cation-containing laxatives, sucralfate, buffered medications, oral calcium and iron supplements (including multivitamins containing calcium or iron), and sorbitol.

Odefsey may also interact with azole antifungals, H2-receptor antagonists, macrolide or ketolide antibiotics, and narcotics.

Common side effects of Dovato include:

Odefsey (emtricitabine, rilpivirine, and tenofovir alafenamide) is a combination of two HIV nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) indicated as a complete regimen for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in patients 12 years of age and older as initial therapy in those with no antiretroviral treatment history with HIV-1 RNA less than or equal to 100,000 copies per mL; or to replace a stable antiretroviral regimen in those who are virologically-suppressed (HIV-1 RNA less than 50 copies per mL) for at least six months with no history of treatment failure and no known substitutions associated with resistance to the individual components of Odefsey.

Dovato may interact with other antiretroviral drugs for the treatment of HIV-1 infection, dofetilide, metformin, anticonvulsants, rifampin, St. John’s wort, cation-containing antacids or laxatives, sucralfate, buffered medications, oral calcium and iron supplements (including multivitamins containing calcium or iron), and sorbitol.

Odefsey may interact with antacids, antimycobacterials, azole antifungals, H2-receptor antagonists, macrolide or ketolide antibiotics, and narcotics. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

The dose of Dovato is one tablet taken orally once daily with or without food.

The recommended dosage of Odefsey is one tablet taken orally once daily with a meal.
