Celebrex (celecoxib) and Motrin (ibuprofen) are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used to reduce fever, and relieve pain, swelling, and tenderness caused by arthritis and menstrual cramps.

Celebrex is also used for familial FAP and acute pain.

Motrin is available over-the-counter (OTC).

Side effects of Celebrex and Motrin that are similar include headache, stomach/abdominal pain, indigestion/heartburn, diarrhea, nausea, bloating, gas, dizziness, nervousness, and skin rash.

Side effects of Celebrex that are different from Motrin include upset stomach, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, and insomnia.

Side effects of Motrin that are different from Celebrex include constipation, vomiting, skin itching, blurred vision, and ringing in the ears.

Both Celebrex and Motrin may interact with antidepressants, lithium, blood thinners, heart or blood pressure medications, and diuretics (water pills).

Celebrex may also interact with other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), other cold/allergy/pain medicine that contains NSAIDs, fluconazole, and ACE inhibitors.

Motrin may also interact with cyclosporine, pemetrexed, methotrexate, and steroids.

Side effects of Celebrex include:

• headache,
• abdominal pain,
• indigestion,
• diarrhea,
• nausea,
• upset stomach,
• bloating,
• gas,
• dizziness,
• nervousness,
• headache,
• runny or stuffy nose,
• sore throat,
• skin rash, and
• insomnia.

Celebrex may cause serious stomach and intestinal ulcers.

Common side effects of Motrin (Ibuprofen) include:

• stomach pain,
• constipation,
• diarrhea,
• bloating,
• gas,
• heartburn,
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• dizziness,
• headache,
• nervousness,
• skin itching or rash,
• blurred vision, or
• ringing in the ears.

Other side effects of Motrin may occur. Consult your physician if you experience any possible side effects of Motrin.

Celebrex used to treat pain and redness, swelling, and heat (inflammation) from medical conditions such as different types of arthritis, menstrual cramps, and other types of short-term pain.

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) indicated for relief of the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, for relief of mild to moderate pain, and for treatment of primary dysmenorrhea. A generic formulation is available.

Do not take Celebrex:

• if you have had an asthma attack, hives, or other allergic reaction with aspirin or any other NSAIDs.
• right before or after heart bypass surgery.

Ibuprofen may interact with other drugs. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

Carefully consider the potential benefits and risks of Celebrex and other treatment options before deciding to use Celebrex. Use the lowest effective dosage for the shortest duration consistent with individual patient treatment goals.

The recommended dose of Motrin should be adjusted to suit individual patients needs but should not exceed 3200 mg in the total daily dose. Use of alcohol and smoking could increase side effects. Safe use of Motrin for use by children has not been established. It is not known whether ibuprofen is harmful to an unborn baby.
