Ibsrela vs. Amitiza

Are Ibsrela and Amitiza the Same Thing?

Ibsrela (tenapanor) and Amitiza (lubiprostone) are used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults.

Amitiza is also used to treat chronic constipation in adults.

Ibsrela and Amitiza belong to different drug classes. Ibsrela is a sodium/hydrogen exchanger 3 (NHE3) inhibitor and Amitiza is a chloride channel activator.

Side effects of Ibsrela and Amitiza that are similar include diarrhea, abdominal distension/bloating, gas (flatulence), and dizziness.

Side effects of Amitiza that are different from Ibsrela include nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, dry mouth, runny nose, cough, fever, headache, joint/back pain, and trouble sleeping.

Both Ibsrela and Amitiza may interact with other drugs.

What Are Possible Side Effects of Ibsrela?

Common side effects of Ibsrela include:

  • diarrhea,
  • abdominal distension,
  • gas (flatulence), and
  • dizziness.

  • gas,
  • bloating,

Tell your doctor if you have unlikely but serious side effects of Amitiza including:

  • severe diarrhea,
  • swelling of arms or legs, and
  • mental/mood changes.

What Is Ibsrela?

What Is Amitiza?

Amitiza (lubiprostone) is a chloride channel activator used to treat chronic constipation in adults. Amitiza is also used to treat irritable bowel syndrome in women with constipation as the main symptom.

 

What Drugs Interact With Ibsrela?

Ibsrela may interact with other drugs. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before using Ibsrela; maternal use is not expected to result in fetal exposure to the drug. It is unknown if Ibsrela passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

What Drugs Interact With Amitiza?

There may be other drugs that can affect Amitiza. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.

 

How Should Ibsrela Be Taken?

The recommended dosage of Ibsrela in adults is 50 mg, orally twice daily.

How Should Amitiza Be Taken?

To treat chronic idiopathic constipation, the recommended dose of Amitiza is 24 mcg twice daily orally with food and water. To treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation, the recommended dose is 8 mcg twice daily orally with food and water.
