Albenza (albendazole) and Tindamax (tinidazole) are used to treat different types of infections.

Albenza is used to treat certain infections caused by worms such as pork tapeworm and dog tapeworm.

Tindamax is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as infection of the intestines or vagina. Tindamax is also used to treat certain sexually transmitted infections.

Albenza and Tindamax belong to different drug classes. Albenza is a broad spectrum anthelmintic (anti-worm medication) and Tindamax is an antibiotic.

Common side effects of Albenza include:

• nausea,
• vomiting,
• stomach and abdominal pain,
• headache,
• dizziness, or
• temporary hair loss.

Tell your doctor if you have serious side effects of Albenza including:

• vision changes,
• yellowing eyes or skin,
• severe stomach or abdominal pain,
• dark urine,
• unusual tiredness,
• easy bruising or bleeding,
• signs of infection (e.g., fever, persistent sore throat),
• changes in the amount of urine,
• severe or persistent headache,
• seizures,
• confusion, or
• very stiff neck.

Common side effects of Tindamax include:

• bitter or metallic taste in the mouth,
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• upset stomach,
• stomach cramps/pain,
• indigestion,
• loss of appetite,
• constipation,
• diarrhea,
• dizziness,
• drowsiness,
• vaginal itching or discharge,
• weakness,
• tiredness, or
• headache

Tell your doctor if you experience serious side effects of Tindamax including:

• fever,
• chills,
• body aches,
• flu symptoms,
• numbness,
• burning pain,
• tingly feeling, or
• seizures (convulsions)

Tindamax (tinidazole) is an antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as infection of the intestines or vagina. Tindamax is also used to treat certain sexually transmitted infections.

Albenza may interact with other medications including antibiotics, cimetidine, dexamethasone, praziquantel, or theophylline. Tell your doctor all medications you are taking. During pregnancy, Albenza should be used only when prescribed. It may harm a fetus.

Tindamax may interact with seizure medications, blood thinners, or lithium.

Tindamax may also interact with other antibiotics, cyclosporine, fluorouracil, isoniazid, St. John's wort, tacrolimus, antidepressants, antifungal medications, barbiturates, heart or blood pressure medication, or HIV medications.

Dosing of Albenza varies, depending upon which parasitic infection is being treated.

It is advisable to take tinidazole with food to minimize the incidence of epigastric discomfort and other gastrointestinal side-effects. Food does not affect the oral bioavailability of tinidazole. Alcoholic beverages should be avoided when taking tinidazole and for 3 days afterward. For those unable to swallow tablets, tinidazole tablets may be crushed in artificial cherry syrup to be taken with food.
