Definition of Refractive Lens Exchange

Refractive lens exchange is a surgical procedure that replaces the natural lens of the eye with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The goal is to achieve sharper vision, reducing the need for glasses or contact lenses. Refractive lens exchange is usually done to correct for presbyopia or severe farsightedness when other procedures are not suitable. Lens replacement surgery also can correct nearsightedness but is often not recommended for nearsightedness when LASIK or other techniques are available. It is also known as lens replacement surgery.
