Definition of Mycobacterium abscessus

Mycobacterium abscessus: an environmental bacteria type that is found in dust, soil, and water. It is distantly related to the mycobacteria that cause tuberculosis and leprosy. Mycobacterium abscessus has caused infections in the healthcare setting when it has been found to contaminate medical devices or medications. Most infections caused by M. abscessus are skin and soft tissue infections, but it has also caused lung infections in people with chronic lung diseases. M.abscessus infections are usually transmitted by contaminated substances or devices, and it is not believed to be commonly spread from person to person.
