What Is Maxzide?
Maxzide (triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide) is a combination of a potassium-conserving diuretic and a natriuretic agent and is prescribed as a treatment for hypertension (high blood pressure) and edema. Maxzide is also a diuretic given to patients who cannot risk low blood potassium. Maxzide may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive drugs, such as beta-blockers but dosages may need to be adjusted; regardless, potassium levels in patients is recommended for all patients taking Maxzide. Maxzide is available in generic form.
What Are Side Effects of Maxzide?

Other side effects of Maxzide include:
Tell your doctor if you experience rare but serious side effects including fainting, muscle cramps/weakness, slow/fast/irregular heartbeat, decrease in vision, eye pain, signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine), or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction (rash, itching/swelling, especially of the face/tongue/throat, severe dizziness, trouble breathing
Dosage for Maxzide?
Maxzide has two preparations based on the strengths of the two components; triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide at concentrations of 37.5 and 25 mg or 75 and 50 mg, respectively. The usual dose of Maxzide is 25mg based on the hydrochlorothiazide concentration, one or two tablets daily, given as a single dose. Divided daily doses, (rather than a single daily dose, and not recommend by the supplier) may place patients at an increased risk of electrolyte imbalance and kidney dysfunction.
What Drugs, Substances, or Supplements Interact with Maxzide?
The routine use of this and other diuretics in an otherwise healthy pregnant woman to reduce minor dependent edema or in an attempt to prevent toxemia of pregnancy is inappropriate and exposes mother and fetus to unnecessary hazards.
Maxzide During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
The safe use of Maxzide in pregnancy has not been established and the effect of Maxzide in pregnant women has not been studied. Maxzide should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the risk to the fetus. If use of Maxzide is deemed essential, breastfeeding mothers should stop nursing because some of the drug is found in breast milk. Maxzide has not been studied in children.

Non-melanoma Skin Cancer
Hydrochlorothiazide is associated with an increased risk of non-melanoma skin cancer. In a study conducted in the Sentinel System, increased risk was predominantly for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and in white patients taking large cumulative doses. The increased risk for SCC in the overall population was approximately 1 additional case per 16,000 patients per year, and for white patients taking a cumulative dose of ≥ 50,000 mg the risk increase was approximately 1 additional SCC case for every 6,700 patients per year.
