    What is cenegermin ophthalmic (Oxervate)?

    Cenegermin ophthalmic (for the eye) is used to treat neurotrophic keratitis, a rare degenerative disease involving nerve damage that causes a loss of normal functioning of the cornea (the protective front layer of your eye).

    Cenegermin ophthalmic may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

    What are the possible side effects of cenegermin ophthalmic (Oxervate)?

    Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

    Common side effects may include:

    • eye pain or redness;
    • eye swelling; or
    • watery eyes.

    Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines you use.

    What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking cenegermin ophthalmic (Oxervate)?

    Cenegermin ophthalmic is not approved for use by anyone younger than 2 years old.

    Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

    How should I take cenegermin ophthalmic (Oxervate)?

    Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the medicine exactly as directed.

    Read and carefully follow the Instructions for Use provided with your medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you do not understand these instructions.

    Wash your hands before using eye medication.

    You may need to use this medicine several times per day. Follow your doctor's dosing instructions very carefully.

    Do not shake the medication vial.

    Use only the number of drops your doctor has prescribed.

    Wait at least 15 minutes before inserting contact lenses or using other eye medications.

    Cenegermin ophthalmic is kept in a freezer at the pharmacy. Once you receive your weekly carton, place it into a refrigerator within 5 hours. Do not refreeze. Use the medicine within 14 days.

    Do not attempt to use a vial of eye drops that are frozen. To thaw the vial, leave it at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Do not shake the vial.

    Each weekly carton contains 7 vials of eye drops, one vial for each day of the week. Throw a vial away after you have used all doses for that day.

    Once you open and start using a vial, store it in the weekly carton in a refrigerator. Do not freeze. You may also store an opened vial at cool room temperature.

    Throw away any vial that has been opened for 12 hours or longer, even if there is medicine left inside.

    What happens if I miss a dose (Oxervate)?

    Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not use two doses at one time.

    What happens if I overdose (Oxervate)?

    An overdose of cenegermin ophthalmic is not expected to be dangerous. Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222 if anyone has accidentally swallowed the medication.

    What should I avoid while taking cenegermin ophthalmic (Oxervate)?

    Follow your doctor's instructions about any restrictions on food, beverages, or activity.

    What other drugs will affect cenegermin ophthalmic (Oxervate)?

    Medicine used in the eyes is not likely to be affected by other drugs you use. But many drugs can interact with each other. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all medicines you use, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
