What is ophthalmic cenegermin and how does it work?
Ophthalmic cenegermin is a lab-engineered recombinant form of human nerve growth factor used to treat damaged nerves in the eye. Human nerve growth factor is a protein that is essential for growth, maintenance, differentiation and survival of nerve cells (neurons) in the body.
Cenegermin interacts with nerve growth factor receptors in the anterior segment of the eye and helps heal and repair corneal nerve damage.
How is ophthalmic cenegermin used?
Cenegermin is an ophthalmic solution that is topically administered in the eye to treat neurotrophic keratitis. Neurotrophic keratitis is a rare degenerative eye disease that is caused by improper functioning of nerves that innervate the cornea. Neurotrophic keratitis can scar and damage the cornea leading to vision loss.
What are the side effects of ophthalmic cenegermin?
Side effects of ophthalmic cenegermin may include:
- Eye pain on instillation
- Corneal deposits
- Foreign body sensation
- Ocular hyperemia (dilation of blood vessels)
- Ocular inflammation and tearing
