What Is Inderal LA?
Inderal LA (propranolol hydrochloride) is a beta-blocker used to treat tremors, angina (chest pain), hypertension (high blood pressure), heart rhythm disorders, and other heart or circulatory conditions. Inderal LA is also used to treat or prevent heart attack, and to reduce the severity and frequency of migraine headaches. Inderal LA is available in generic form.
What Are Side Effects of Inderal LA?
Common side effects of Inderal LA include:
- dizziness,
- lightheadedness, or
- tiredness as your body adjusts to the medication.
Other side effects of Inderal LA include:
- nausea,
- vomiting,
- stomach pain or cramps,
- diarrhea,
- constipation,
- vision changes,
- trouble sleeping (insomnia),
- unusual dreams,
- decreased sex drive,
- impotence, or
- difficulty having an orgasm.
Tell your doctor if you have unlikely but serious side effects of Inderal LA including:
- shortness of breath,
- blue fingers or toes,
- swelling ankles or feet,
- mental/mood changes (e.g., depression),
- numbness or tingling of arms or legs,
- very slow heartbeat,
- fainting,
- unexplained or sudden weight gain, or
- increased thirst or urination.
Dosage for Inderal LA
The usual dosage of Inderal LA ranges from 80 to 160 mg once daily, depending on the condition being treated.
Inderal LA may interact with clonidine, digitalis, dobutamine, haloperidol, isoproterenol, blood thinners, antidepressants, MAO inhibitors, aspirin or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), doxazosin, prazosin, terazosin, heart medications, amiodarone, propafenone, quinidine, or ACE inhibitors.
Inderal LA During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
During pregnancy, Inderal LA should be used only when prescribed. Infants exposed to this medication during pregnancy may have low birth weight, low blood sugar, or slow breathing/heartbeat. This drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficult breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling).
Call your doctor at once if you have:
- slow or uneven heartbeats;
- a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
- wheezing or trouble breathing;
- sudden weakness, vision problems, or loss of coordination (especially in a child with hemangioma that affects the face or head);
- cold feeling in your hands and feet;
- depression, confusion, hallucinations;
- heart problems--swelling, rapid weight gain, feeling short of breath;
- low blood sugar--headache, hunger, sweating, irritability, dizziness, fast heart rate, and feeling anxious or shaky; or
- low blood sugar in a baby--pale skin, blue or purple skin, sweating, fussiness, crying, not wanting to eat, feeling cold, drowsiness, weak or shallow breathing (breathing may stop for short periods), seizure (convulsions), or loss of consciousness.
Common side effects may include:
- dizziness, tiredness;
- nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach cramps;
- sleep problems (insomnia); or
- runny or stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, hoarse voice.

SIDE EFFECTS
The following adverse events were observed and have been reported in patients using propranolol.
Cardiovascular: Bradycardia; congestive heart failure; intensification of AV block; hypotension; paresthesia of hands; thrombocytopenic purpura; arterial insufficiency, usually of the Raynaud type.
Central Nervous System: Light-headedness; mental depression manifested by insomnia, lassitude, weakness, fatigue; catatonia; visual disturbances; hallucinations; vivid dreams; an acute reversible syndrome characterized by disorientation for time and place, short-term memory loss, emotional lability, slightly clouded sensorium, and decreased performance on neuropsychometrics. For immediate release formulations, fatigue, lethargy, and vivid dreams appear dose related.
Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, abdominal cramping, diarrhea, constipation, mesenteric arterial thrombosis, ischemic colitis.
Allergic: Hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylactic/anaphylactoid reactions; pharyngitis and agranulocytosis; erythematous rash; fever combined with aching and sore throat; laryngospasm; respiratory distress.
Respiratory: Bronchospasm.
Hematologic: Agranulocytosis, nonthrombocytopenic purpura, and thrombocytopenic purpura.
Autoimmune: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Skin and Mucous Membranes: Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, dry eyes, exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme, urticaria, alopecia, SLE-like reactions, and psoriasisiform rashes. Oculomucocutaneous syndrome involving the skin, serous membranes, and conjunctivae reported for a beta-blocker (practolol) have not been associated with propranolol.
Genitourinary: Male impotence; Peyronie's disease.
