What Is Cetylev?
Cetylev (acetylcysteine) effervescent tablets for oral solution is an antidote for acetaminophen overdose indicated to prevent or lessen hepatic (liver) injury after ingestion of a potentially hepatotoxic quantity of acetaminophen in patients with acute ingestion or from repeated supratherapeutic ingestion.
What Are Side Effects of Cetylev?
Common side effects of Cetylev include:
- nausea,
- vomiting,
- other gastrointestinal symptoms, and
- rash with or without fever
Dosage for Cetylev
The loading dose of Cetylev is140 mg/kg administered orally. The maintenance dose of Cetylev is 70 mg/kg repeated every 4 hours for a total of 17 doses.

Cetylev may interact with other drugs. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.
Cetylev During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before taking Cetylev. Both acetaminophen and acetylcysteine cross the placenta. Delaying treatment in pregnant women with acetaminophen overdose and potentially toxic acetaminophen plasma levels may increase the risk of harm to a fetus. It is unknown if Cetylev passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
