Prolixine

Prolixine - General Information

A phenothiazine used in the treatment of psychoses. Its properties and uses are generally similar to those of chlorpromazine. [PubChem]

Pharmacology of Prolixine

Prolixine is a trifluoro-methyl phenothiazine derivative intended for the management of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Prolixine has not been shown effective in the management of behaviorial complications in patients with mental retardation.

Prolixine for patients

Given the likelihood that some patients exposed chronically to neuroleptics will develop tardive dyskinesia, it is advised that all patients in whom chronic use is contemplated be given, if possible, full information about this risk. The decision to inform patients and/or their guardians must obviously take into account the clinical circumstances and the competency of the patient to understand the information provided.

Prolixine Contraindications

Phenothiazines are contraindicated in patients with suspected or established subcortical brain damage, in patients receiving large doses of hypnotics, and in comatose or severely depressed states. The presence of blood dyscrasia or liver damage precludes the use of fluphenazine hydrochloride. Fluphenazine hydrochloride is contraindicated in patients who have shown hypersensitivity to fluphenazine; cross-sensitivity to phenothiazine derivatives may occur.

Additional information about Prolixine

Prolixine Indication: For management of manifestations of psychotic disorders.
Mechanism Of Action: Prolixine blocks postsynaptic mesolimbic dopaminergic D1 and D2 receptors in the brain; depresses the release of hypothalamic and hypophyseal hormones and is believed to depress the reticular activating system thus affecting basal metabolism, body temperature, wakefulness, vasomotor tone, and emesis.
Drug Interactions: Amphetamine Decreased anorexic effect, may increase psychotic symptoms
