Kenalog Spray

Kenalog Spray (triamcinolone acetonide) is a topical corticosteroid indicated for the relief of itching due to skin irritation. Kenalog Spray is available as a generic drug. Common side effects of Kenalog Spray include burning, itching, irritation, and dryness. Severe side effects of Kenalog Spray include:

• severe skin rash,
• shortness of breath,
• difficulty swallowing, and
• skin infections

Kenalog Spray comes in two sizes, a 63 and 100 mg can in strength of 0.147 mg per gram. Directions for use of the spray can are provided on the label. Kenalog Spray may be applied to any area of the body, though care should be taken to see that the eyes are covered, and that inhalation of the spray is avoided when sprayed about the face. Kenalog Spray may interact with other drugs. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women on teratogenic effects from topically applied corticosteroids like Kenalog Spray. Therefore, topical corticosteroids should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Topically applied corticosteroids should not be used extensively on pregnant patients, in large amounts, or for prolonged periods of time. It is not known if the use of Kenalog Spray is detectable in breast milk. Caution should be exercised when topical corticosteroids are administered to a nursing woman. Kenalog spray should be used cautiously in children because of a larger skin surface area to body weight ratio makes them more susceptible to adrenal suppression, Cushing's syndrome, and intracranial hypertension, all of which have been reported in children receiving topical corticosteroids.

Kenalog Spray Consumer Information

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

• worsening of your skin condition;
• redness, warmth, swelling, oozing, or severe irritation of any treated skin;
• blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights;
• high blood sugar--increased thirst, increased urination, dry mouth, fruity breath odor; or
• possible signs of absorbing this medicine through your skin or gums--weight gain (especially in your face or your upper back and torso), slow wound healing, thinning or discolored skin, increased body hair, muscle weakness, nausea, diarrhea, tiredness, mood changes, menstrual changes, sexual changes.

Children can absorb larger amounts of this medicine through the skin and may be more likely to have side effects such as growth delay, headaches, or pain behind the eyes. A baby using this medicine may have a bulging soft spot (the top of the head where the skull hasn't yet grown together).

Common side effects may include:

• burning, itching, dryness, or other irritation of treated skin;
• redness or crusting around your hair follicles;
• redness or itching around your mouth;
• allergic skin reaction;
• stretch marks;
• acne, increased body hair growth;
• thinning skin or discoloration; or
• white or "pruned" appearance of the skin (caused by covering treated skin with a tight bandage or other covering).

The following local adverse reactions are reported infrequently with topical corticosteroids, but may occur more frequently with the use of occlusive dressings (reactions are listed in an approximate decreasing order of occurrence): burning, itching, irritation, dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, maceration of the skin, secondary infection, skin atrophy, striae, andmiliaria.
