Primaquine phosphate is an antimalarial drug prescribed to treat and prevent malaria. Primaquine is available in generic form. Common side effects of Primaquine include:

Tell your doctor if you have rare but very serious side effects of Primaquine including:

  • signs of serious infection (such as high fever, severe chills, persistent sore throat),
  • signs of a sudden loss of red blood cells (such as severe tiredness, brown urine, pale lips/nails/skin, fast heartbeat or fast breathing with usual activities), or
  • signs of a certain blood problem (methemoglobinemia, including bluish skin/lips/nails, headache, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, weakness, confusion, chest pain, sudden pounding heartbeat).

The recommended dosage of Primaquine is one tablet daily for 14 days. Primaquine may interact with other drugs. Do not take Primaquine if you have recently taken Atabrine (quinacrine), have severe rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or are taking some anti-cancer drugs. Tell your doctor all medications you are taking. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness when taking Primaquine. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before taking Primaquine.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop taking primaquine and call your doctor at once if you have:

  • fever;
  • dark colored urine;
  • pale or yellowed skin; or
  • confusion or weakness.

Common side effects may include:

  • nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps;
  • irregular heartbeats;
  • rash; or
  • dizziness.

Primaquine Professional Information

SIDE EFFECTS

Gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, and abdominal cramps.

Hematologic: leukopenia, hemolytic anemia in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficient individuals, and methemoglobinemia in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) methemoglobin reductase deficient individuals.

Cardiac: Cardiac Arrhythmia and QT interval prolongation (see PRECAUTIONS, OVERDOSAGE).

Nervous System: Dizziness.

Skin and Soft Tissue: Rash, pruritus.
